Earlier than most people do. Before the slab is poured if you're considering in-slab underfloor hydronic, and before the ceilings are closed up if you want ducted. Once those stages pass, your options narrow and the cost of the remaining ones goes up. A conversation at design stage costs nothing and usually saves money.
Our 1960s Bentleigh house is still cold with the heating running. Why?
Usually it isn't the heater. Homes of that era commonly have little to no wall insulation, single glazing and gaps around the floor and skirtings, so heat leaves as fast as you make it. We'll tell you honestly if insulation and draught sealing would do more for you than a bigger system — a larger unit fighting the same losses just costs more to run.
We've added a second storey. Why is upstairs always too hot?
Heat rises, and an unzoned system treats the whole house as one space. Zoning lets you run the upstairs and downstairs independently, which fixes both the overheated bedrooms and the cold living area. On a two-storey Bentleigh rebuild, we'd generally treat zoning as essential rather than an upgrade.
